Requiae of Whazzit

Created by Sparkie

Singular: Requia
Plural: Requiae
Group: Apparition of Requiae

General Info: Freaky, vulture-like birds, Requiae are easily the most dangerous shinies to take to the skies on Whazzit. With sinister, hook-like beaks, wickedly curved talons, and broad wings edged with metallic, razor-sharp pinions, it’s readily apparent that they’re capable of killing, but their true menace rests in their feeding habits, rather than their physical forms. Rather than simply consuming flesh, Requiae feed on emotions. Groups of them, called an Apparition, often gather together over battlefields, the better to feast upon the pain, suffering, and chaos below. In more peaceful times, however, they find themselves forced to feed upon less succulent prey… and thus tend to cause chaos amongst the massed ranks of Whazzitians.

Generally under a meter in length, they’re not intimidatingly large, though their small stature belies their savage natures. They range in color from pitch black to steely grey, with rare individuals shading to crimson and others, even rarer, hatching a pale, sickly white. Albino Requiae are not so rare as to be unknown, but the chances of them surviving to adulthood are slim, for the others in the Apparition look upon the pale one as the object of disgust and the target of wrath. Their eyes are bulbous and strange, always either blood red, eerie silver, or depthless black.

Mating Info: Being creatures with a strong, inherent sense of drama, Requiae females more often than not rise at night- preferably of the 'it was a dark and stormy’ variety. She will openly torment her prey, often torturing it before killing it, the better to feast upon it’s raw terror. Taking to the skies with a loud, soul-rattling shriek, she’ll lead her suitors on a dangerous chase, rarely caring if they are slain or not. Come dawn, or at least come her choice, she and the chosen male will dive together, vanishing into the darkness.

Bonding Info: The Grim can lay anywhere between ten and fifteen eggs to a clutch, but a 'lucky' thirteen is most common. Unlike many shinies, Requiae rarely hatch alone. A massed Apparition, whether blood kindred to the hatchlings or not, tends to gather near the low, dark area where the Grim rests her clutch. It is their duty to gather their bonds, or any unfortunate wanderers, to provide a better selection for the newly hatched youngsters to feed from. Requiae eggs are large and black, and gleam with a dangerous, polished brightness, looking for all the world like globes of jet gathered together, and feeling nearly as hard. The hatchlings have quite the fight to free themselves from the stone-hard shells, but what else are razor-edged wings for? Rather than helpless, mewling, featherless things, Requiae hatch fully ready to fly, and as dangerous as their older counterparts, for the Apparition will tolerate no weakness from those they count among their ranks.

There's no set method to bonding a Requiae hatchling, save that they choose the individuals they desire, and will not be Impressed no matter what gifts or compliments are offered. Instead, they choose what most appeals to them- some, a particularly strong emotion, others, a kindred spirit, still others, a being who they find interesting (or flavorful, as the case may be). No matter why a Requiae chooses a person, however, rest assured that it's intentions are not innocent. The soul-sucking birds are parasites, and their bonded is not a friend, but rather a host upon whom they will feed for the rest of their lives.

COLOR
The largest of the Requiae, and the only Queen, the Grim is most easily noted by her size and the blood-red blades that edge her dark wings. Her manner is truly that of a mother, and a regal one at that. She is cunning and talented, her mind as sharp as her wings, and just as razor-edged. Do not be fooled by her warm, welcoming charm, though- the Grim is the leader of a massive clan of killers, and not for nothing do they follow her.

The Remnant is the largest Requiae lord, surrendering only the slightest trace of length to the Grim, if even that. His pinions are the dirty ivory of old bone, as if the flesh had been stripped from the edges of his broad wings. In temperament, he is grim, quiet, and unforgiving. Fear, particularly, he will not tolerate- the Remnant is no coward, and expects equal bravery from those around him, unless the incur his cold wrath.

COLOR
This small lord is possessed of a grace and a delicacy that seem almost out of place on such a demented bird. His light frame allows him to glide, rather than fly, the eerie, glowing green of his wings making him into a ghostly wraith in the darkness. Like the will-o'-the-wisp he so resembles, the Spectre is a greedy, deceptive beast. He delights in trickery and torment, and cares little who he harms, so long as he profits from their misery in the end.

COLOR
When stories of Requiae chill the hearts of otherwise brave people, it is the Phantom those tales speak of. This lord is cruel and spiteful, uncaring and vicious. While other Requiae may be content to feed upon the emotions they find, the Phantom prefers to feed upon pain, and fear, and panic… and when he can not find these, he will create them. The blades of his wings are the inky blue of bruises, and he will not hesitate to leave you marks to match them. Of all the Requiae, the Phantom is the most likely to become violent with his host, not hesitating to maim or otherwise injure them without warning.

COLOR
She is no queen, but one would never know this if one were not measuring the Allure against her mother. She appears to be an idealized version of the Grim- her pinions a gleaming, jewel-bright scarlet, rather than a bloodied crimson, her build sleek and falconlike. Her manner is less like that of a queen, however, and more like that of a spoiled and flirtatious princess. The Allure is always the center of attention, her nature that of a spider weaving an enchanting web, and those who find themselves ensnared by this temptress will find little mercy from her.

COLOR
Unlike most Requiae, who seem indifferent to their bond/hosts at best, the Lament appears to genuinely care about her bond's well-being. She is sympathetic and comforting, likely to stay at your side when you're feeling down… though there is a fair chance that she is simply choosing to feed from your negative emotions. Either way, the Legacy's bondmate is left feeling lightened and optimistic, courtesy of this disconcertingly affectionate death bird. She is less delicate than her Allure sister, and nowhere near as brilliant to behold, for her coloration edges more towards grey, her wing blades usually a dull iron or pewter hue.

COLOR
Requiae do not tolerate weakness, and for this reason, the life of the Legacy is often a harsh one. These little males are the smallest of the species, and, what's more, are the least intelligent among them. Their nature makes them irritable and impatient, and disinclined to think decisions through. They're pushy little bastards who don't care about anyone save themselves, though their delicate coloration- ranging from bleached grey to pale powder blue- makes them look a lot more gentle than they truly are.
